Most-Read GeekFluent Posts of 2012

Admittedly, metrics aren’t all that exciting in and of themselves — it’s the information and the trends behind them, driving the numbers that are interesting.  This, in a single sentence, is the idea behind the Big Data phenomenon.

That said, the data I have to present here is very near and dear to me.  It’s interesting to look back and see which of my posts from 2012 got a lot of attention and which didn’t.  It offers some insight into what my readers are interested in.

That said, the most-read GeekFluent posts in 2012 are listed below with full transparency. Continue reading

January EMC Solutions for VMware Webcasts

The New Year is here, and that means it’s time for another year’s worth of weekly webcasts from EMC. I’m curious to see how it goes. For the third year in a row, the same topic, “The Value of VMware Integration”, has started off the year. I gave that presentation in both 2011 and 2012. This year, Simon Seagrave (@Kiwi_Si) will be giving it. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with it.

One of the great things about this series is that every webcast is recorded and then made available for on-demand viewing. As such, you may find it worth your while to register for a webcast you’re interested in even if you can’t attend it live. Folks who register will get email with a link to the recording as soon as it’s posted.

The webcasts run on Thursdays at 8:00 PST, 11:00EST, 16:00 UTC. The topics for January and their brief descriptions are listed below. Continue reading

2012: The GeekFluent Year in Review

I’ve been thinking that I really need to be taking a more deliberate approach to this blog and make sure I’m posting more regularly.  Looking around, all of the big names in blogging seem to put out a year-end post.  They tend to fall into one of two categories:

  1. The Top Ten (or Five) <Things in a Specific Category> of 2012
  2. My Top Five (or Ten) <Specific Category> Predictions for 2013

I thought about doing one or the other (or even both) of these styles of posts, but anything I thought to do seemed like a retread of other things already out there.  Others got there before me, and, quite frankly, I don’t have anything new or original to add at the moment.

So, Dear Reader, instead, I’ll be bringing you the 2012 GeekFluent Year in Review. Continue reading

VMware Releases vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager

VMware has added the ability to manage non-vSphere hypervisors to vCenter with the release of vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager 1.0.

At the moment, the only non-VMware hypervisor it supports is Microsoft’s Hyper-V (although in both the 2008 and 2008 R2 flavors), so the Multi-Hypervisor name seems ambitious.  I say we should keep in mind that this is a 1.0 release and interpret the choice of name as a sign of things we should look for in future releases.

Features include:

EMC Elect – A Founder is Me

Today, EMC announced a community-driven recognition program called EMC Elect.  I’m very proud to follow that with the announcement that I have been one of ten people selected as Founding Members of this new program.

The idea of the program is to recognize and reward technical contributors and knowledge sharers in the EMC community.  The recognition and program are analogous to Microsoft’s MVP program and VMware’s vExpert program.

I’m honored and humbled to have been selected for this. Continue reading

Achievement Unlocked: Certification Quest

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have caught some of the story of chasing certifications in October and how the best-laid plans meant nothing to Hurricane Sandy. Despite the obstacles thrown in our way, my teammates and I charged ahead and succeeded in the Bold Plan that was Certification Quest, wherein 6 people achieved 10 EMC certifications in 3.5 weeks (I got 4 of them, taking 4 exams over a 2-day period).

Now that’s it’s over and we’ve had the chance to relax a little, I thought I’d pull together some of my thoughts about the whole process. Continue reading

BYOD Presentation – Tuesday 2 October

On Tuesday 2 October, I’ll be giving a presentation titled “Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) — The Next Evolution of Computing”.

I’ll be doing this as the guest speaker at the Greater Boston Network Users Group monthly meeting.

The topic is an exciting one to me.  With the proliferation of mobile devices everywhere (I myself have 1 Android smartphone and 2 tablets, plus 2 laptops…), we really have entered what VMware has been calling the “Post-PC Era”.  People want access to their applications and data: Continue reading
