BYOD Presentation – Tuesday 2 October

On Tuesday 2 October, I’ll be giving a presentation titled “Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) — The Next Evolution of Computing”.

I’ll be doing this as the guest speaker at the Greater Boston Network Users Group monthly meeting.

The topic is an exciting one to me.  With the proliferation of mobile devices everywhere (I myself have 1 Android smartphone and 2 tablets, plus 2 laptops…), we really have entered what VMware has been calling the “Post-PC Era”.  People want access to their applications and data:

  • Whenever they want
  • Wherever they are
  • On whatever device they want to use

Most businesses actually want to provide these things to their employees — it makes it easy for them to be more productive under a variety of circumstances where a traditional desktop system just wouldn’t help.  The reason they haven’t all already rushed to adopt BYOD is that the shift comes with some challenges as well.  My presentation will identify the common challenges presented by BYOD and offer suggested solutions to them.

The outline of my presentation is:

  • Introductions
  • What IsBYOD, Anyways?
    • A Brief History of Computing
    • The Cloud Has Changed Everything
  • Why Would Businesses Want to Support BYOD?
  • OK, What’s the Downside?
  • Solutions to the Challenges Presented by BYOD
  • Building Blocks of a BYOD Solution
  • Q&A

If you’re going to be in the Woburn, MA area, the evening of Tuesday the 2nd, the meeting starts at 18:30 EDT, and my presentation is scheduled for 19:30.  It would be great to have you there.  You can find all the details here.
